MUST HAVE The Florida Keys Dive Guide $19.96 Stephen Frink, William Harrigan April 1998
Amazon Reader Review: As a beginning diver, I found this book to be very informative. It lists practically every reef in the Florida Keys. I especially like the reef maps which show what there is to see at what depth. Then after each reef map, there are photos of what there is to see at that site. It is a paperback, but it has glossy pages and great photos. I thought it was an excellent book - at a value price!

Sitemaster: This is the best diving book in this list. It is a fascinating look at many of the bigger reefs in the Keys. We used this book as a reference source for creating this website. It is filled with beautiful photos, all taken on the reefs described. It has diveplan maps to follow, history, fish descriptions, and many other helpful facts relevant to divers (sound familiar?).

MUST HAVE Ned Deloach's Diving Guide to Underwater Florida $15.16 Ned Deloach November 1996
Amazon Reader Review: This book gives insight from the springs to the Keys,I have been working on the springs and the panhandle and now I`m studying about the keys. That will be the next place I dive and this book is going with me.I also have the 1978 edition and am amazed at the more information that is here especially about the treasure off the Florida coast, that`s another place I want to dive. I`m waiting for the new edition to come out.

Sitemaster: Deloach's book is an excellent diving resource. His sections on the Florida Keys served as reference material for us building this website. They are informative, accurate and helpful. We use his book when we dive other parts of Florida, and have always found it helpful to look up the divesite in his book prior to hitting the water. Strongly Recommended.

excellent June Keith's Key West & the Florida Keys : Food Hotels Beaches Diving Fishing History Writers Festivals Attractions Museums Wildlife (2nd Ed) $15.16 June Keith January 1999
Discover where to go to swim with dolphins, dive the living reef, and camp on the beach in this true insider's guide to America's subtropical island. Descriptions of famous attractions, historic bars, renowned restaurants and America's only living coral reef are supplemented with information about some of its most famous inhabitants--from Jimmy Buffett to Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. 65 line drawings, 6 maps.

Sitemaster: The diving sections in this Keys guidebook are brief and generalized. As with the other guidebooks for sale here, the diving descriptions give the non-resident a small taste of what a visit will be like, and perhaps some ideas on what to ask for when calling a diveshop. The non-diving info is interesting, filled with fun anecdotes and history, and will surely contribute to anyone's understanding of this unique locale. Highly recommended (as guidebook).

excellent Great Reefs of the World $15.96 Carl Roessler November 1992
Amazon Reader Opinion: This book does an excellent job of describing the marine life found in numerous diving locations throughout the world. Mr. Roessler is very informative and descriptive, as well as being very honest and objective about the pros and cons of dive travel to these locations. I will use this book in planning future dive trips since his description of places I have already dived was extremely consistent with my personal experience and observations. His photography is superb and my non-diving friends really enjoyed looking through the book as well. A 'must have' for divers and anyone who appreciates great photography!

Sitemaster: This is a book of beautiful photography, with interesting text to supplement it. There is nothing in the book about the Florida Keys, however the book makes a stellar "coffee table book". The photos and summaries are from divesites all over the world, including the Caribbean, California, Hawaii, Galapagos, Polynesia, Australia, Asia, the Red Sea, and many others.

very good The Insiders' Guide(r) to The Florida Keys & Key West $14.36 Victoria Shearer & Vanessa Richards February 1999
The Insiders' Guide(r) to The Florida Keys & Key West has been revised and updated for 1999 to offer the most accurate information available. Covering all the Keys and Key West, this guide includes chapters on history, accommodations, restaurants, seafood markets, nightlife, boating, cruising, dining, snorkeling, kidstuff, attractions, retirement and much more.

Sitemaster: The diving section of the book is succinct; too much so in our opinion. Numerous divesites are mentioned, however little fine detail is there for the boater. You'll know which sites to ask the diving operations for. The rest of the book covers many of the tourism opportunities in the Keys. An excellent guidebook and supplement for this diving website!

good Diver's Guide to Florida and the Florida Keys $4.76 Jim Stachowicz December 1990
This guide to the best diving in America contains complete information for the diver including detailed maps of diving areas throughout the state and the Keys. Illustrations show locations of diving sites, air stations, rental shops, sunken "treasure" ships. Color photos. 28 charts.

Sitemaster: This small book (64 pgs.) is filled with good, albeit summarized, information about diving opportunities all over Florida. The Keys information details a few of the larger sites and wrecks, and has nice charts. We like this book, especially for the price. A "hell, why not?" book that's definitely worth it.

fair Adventure Guide to the Florida Keys & Everglades National Park (2nd Ed.) $11.96 Joyce Huber, Jon Huber February 1997
Loaded with information on the basics, such as where to stay, the best places to eat, how to get around and what to see, this book also covers much more. Travelers will find extensive contact and pricing information for charter boats, fishing guides, dive operators, canoe rental companies, seaplane tours, airboat rides, sunset cruises and more. There's a large section on cycling trails through the Keys and Everglades, followed by a detailed chapter on hiking trails. Color photos, Maps.

Sitemaster: The book has minimal diving-related discussions. It is more of a generalized guidebook to the Keys. If you're looking for diving-specific info, go elsewhere. As a guidebook, it does an okay job. Not a bad book, especially considering the price.

fair Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures : A Guide to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Caribbean, Hawaii & Florida Keys $15.95 Joyce Huber, Jon Huber March 1998
"Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures" is the first all-snorkeling guide book with top beach and boat sites for every age and experience level. With more sites than any guide on the market, it includes secluded, calm lagoons for novices; close-to-shore reefs for beach lovers, shipwrecks and offshore reefs for intermediate swimmers; plus advanced dives for experienced snorkelers and free divers. Adventurous snorkelers will find details on tame and wild dolphin swims, where to swim with manatees, mantas, turtles, the first snorkel-through museum and enticing, off-the-beaten-track areas.
It also covers the best reef-front resorts and inns for all budgets, boat tours, first aid for coral cuts and sea stings and a special chapter about sharks.

Sitemaster: The book has very brief descriptions of a limited number of dive/snorkel sites in the Florida Keys (15 of about 100). Similarly, it has brief descriptions of sites throughout the Caribbean and Hawaii. Useful for the first time visitor, but not the experienced one.

Scuba Talk : A Guide to Underwater Communication : Florida, Bahamas and Caribbean Edition $11.96 Keith A. Ellenbogen January 1997
To communicate underwater a diver needs one of two things, expensive underwater communication equipment or a creative imagination. Scuba Talk has solved the problem with a system of hand signals to relay the sighting of marine life with speed, ease and accuracy. This book provides a diagram of each hand signal, which is accompanied by a spectacular color photograph, useful facts, plus diving advice for commonly seen aquatic animals in the Florida, Bahamas and Caribbean region.

Sitemaster: serious divers will likely think this complex system is pretty silly. A slate works really well. But for kids, or for a few basic communiques, the book has some good signals. It would take a good knowledge of the marine creatures before the signals would make sense. It does go far beyond the simple hand signals from your PADI classes. It would be a neat gift to give a Junior Open Water graduate.

n/a n/a Snorkeling Guide to Marine Life : Florida Caribbean Bahamas $10.36 Paul Humann, Ned Deloach April 1995
Amazon Reader Review: This is a great book for snorkelers and beginning divers! The color photographs are beautiful and make identification easy. Although this small book is nowhere near as comprehensive as Humann's complete reef identification set, it's a great bargain for those wanting to know the names of most of the common things they see when snorkeling in the Caribbean. The book also contains some valuable pointers about which plants and animals should be approached with caution, how to treat stings, and other interesting facts.
